Sankey Expedition trailer with Roof Tent
Sankey Expedition trailer with Roof Tent. This has been my project for the last few years and it has it been with no expense spared. HOW WRONG I WOULD BE. 2018 began the build, I made thousands of drawings and bought a Sankey Trailer along with hundred’s of meters of box section and welding real. So the frame is 25×25 steel box section as you can see from the last picture. I used steel sheeting on the bottom to protect the underneath and everything was covered in black hammarite, then I used Celotex insulation and marine ply to make the walls. The ply is also varnished. The outside is made up of a plastic aluminium compound, normally used for outdoor shop signs and its very robust. Its all stuck onto the frame with Polly urethane glue and ally angle on the outside with rivets to keep it all nice and tidy. There is a lot of silicone in the joints and I’ve NEVER HAD A LEAK! Then I bought the roof tent and awning (Awning no longer in service due to wind damage) this was from Tuff Trek who’s kit is just amazing. So the roof tent is TT02 (1.4M GREY) bought 2018 Brand new with the septate downstairs compartment. I have cleaned and reapplied water proofing at the end of every season. There is some Marks on there but is all in perfect working order. One of the guy line hoops has unattached and left a small tear but I’ve never had any water and just retied the rope on. Comes with the cover which has had one repair, using a proper kit. The kitchen was then built and redesigned about 10 times and finally all the 12v and 240v electrics went in, like wise the Gas. The last issue I found was when the tent was unfolded it was a little wobbly so I made some legs. These are fully detachable and live in the back, they are just large jack-pads and make the whole set up extremely stable. I KEEP THE TRILER INDOORS DURING OFF SEASON AS I DONT WANT IT TO WEATHER OUTSIDE! So there is 240v power all rigged dup on a fuse board with power sockets everywhere! The inlet is a 32amp so people didn’t try and spilt off the unit and all the RCD are high rated so the oven and microwave ect ect all work with no issue (this was installed by a qualified sparky). The 12v has a kill switch before it hits the switch board and all the switches are indivisibly fused, there is 2 USB sockets and a cigarette socket along with a battery reader. The kitchen is split into 2 sections. Left side is shelfed area with electrics at the top and then shelfs and a draw below, I use this to store the oven, microwave, utensils and chopping boards. Has 2 large shelfs with one small one (1 large and 1 small have a front door with latch to keep everything together) and then the pull out sink and gas cooker combo with running water. The front box has 2 push out locks and stores the water butt and sub pump, the gas and the battery. It has a 32amp inlet and a 240v outdoor plug I use for the battery charger. The back is my storage area as you can see! It also houses my fridge as a small camping one was just not big enough for me, so there is 240v powering there and lighting. I have put in 1 large shelf and a small one which just worked for me but is all totally adaptable to suit your needs. The trailer doors all have super secure garage locks on them and are the same build up as the walls with trim all round. There is on on the side which the tent drops down so when its wet I can load all my kit into the trailer without having to even get out the drop down are of tent. I have 240v outdoor plug box on the front for power into the tent and a 12v outdoor plug for battery power into the tent (lighting). I’ve probably missed something out but hey: I have about 200 pictures so if you are interested and want to see more just get in touch. Oh trailer hitch is just a normal ball, and the handbrake is attached to the wheels so it actually works, I use a discovery 4 to pull the trailer and never have any issues and I’ve also used an Freelander with no issues. Its easy to push into final position and tows nice and straight. Things I had left to do. The kitchen door needs a gas strut, I currently use a tent pose which has never done me wrong but does sometimes get in the way. The tent currently doesn’t have any LED STRIP lights. Apart from that its just what you want to do to make it work for you. I will very very much miss this its been a great time in my life building it and its a well know edition on all my sites, it will truly be missed by so many, its always been the central hub for evening of outdoor life. If you want to come and have a look that is 10000% fine and ill happily go though everything with you, I will also deliver anywhere in the country if that’s something that you require.
